Contact $9.28 It’s an interesting question: would Boney James have recorded Contact if he’d never had a car accident that damaged his teeth and fractured his jaw? In May, 2010, he was rear-ended while stopped by a driver traveling at high speed. Though he was back on-stage in three weeks, the accident caused James to think back on where he’d been in his career. He reflected on the period he spent backing the Isley Brothers, Morris Day, Randy Crawford, and Teena Marie before his solo offering, 1992′s Trust, catapulted him onto the contemporary jazz scene. Contact — his debut for Verve Forecast — indulges those influences. James produced and co-wrote every cut here, including the four vocal numbers. The first of these, “Close to You,” features a stellar performance by Donell Jones; it is one of the album’s true highlights. James plays plays his soprano, interweaving those silky vocal lines with gorgeous fills. Former Destiny’s Child member LeToya Luckett sings on the lilting ballad “When I Had the Chance,” Heather Headley appears on the slippery-grooved Latin-tinged “I’m Waiting,” and Mario does a magnificent job on the dancefloor stepper “That Look on Your Face.” James’ own chops are fine as ever On the instrumental title track, he lets a slightly angular, syncopated, B-3-led rhythm section groove assert itself before smoothly entering and laying down the melody amid Rob Bacon’s guitar fills and a bright-sounding, tightly arranged horn section. On “Cry,” Dean Parks plays a nylon-string guitar, giving the cut an exotic flamenco feel before James breathily lets the melody flow from his tenor. With percussion work by drummer Teddy Campbell and Lenny Castro on congas and timbales, it streams forth in a rich, sensually arrayed meld of colors and textures. “There and Back” is a soul ballad where the saxophonist is the singer. It’s lithe, silky groove is colored by hand percussion as James, with his canny sense of timing, tells a story on his horn. On “Everything Matters,” the laid-back album closer, he plays tenor and alto, aided by Parks on electric guitar, Jimmy Johnson’s keys, Campbell, and Castro. It’s sweet and slow, but not sentimental, one almost hear Ron Isley singing to its melody. Contact is a bright spot in James’ catalog, and underscores his welcome return to recording. ~ Thom Jurek, Rovi |

Java: First Contact (with InfoTrac) $69.49 Java: First Contact has been written from the ground up providing students with no programming background an introduction to object-oriented programming using the Java language. The authors introduce the use of pre-existing objects right from the start, laying the groundwork for successfully learning all major Java objects. This includes learning how to write objects, understanding the importance of inheritance, and object-oriented design. As a result, students establish a strong foundation in the object model so they can build an object-oriented system from start to finish. The book covers all major aspects of the Java language, including making use of classes from the Java standard library. In cases where standard classes are too complex, author defined classes are available. Later chapters are dedicated to covering advanced aspects of the Java language, including GUI’s, applets, input/output, and elementary data structures, enabling students to use a wide variety of tools when writing Java programs. |

Eye Contact $11.98 Anyone who’s spent any time with Gang Gang Dance’s catalog understands that they never stand still as an entity, evolving in sound and personnel. No two records from their shelf sound alike, though the progression of incorporating music and grooves from other cultures has been steady, if often chaotic, amid the squelch and squeal of their sound collages (through 2005′s God’s Money, anyway). With 2008′s Saint Dymphna, GGD embraced grime and dubstep in a weave of careening, skittering synths and beats that were almost songlike. All of that said, Eye Contact, GGD’s debut offering for 4AD, is startling. Gone are the murky layers of production, angular, abstract dark corners, and black holes of space and rawness. Eye Contact is GGD’s first true “pop” record. Liz Bougatsos’ voice rises to the top of every song here, and these are very formal, if complex songs. This is best evidenced by opener “Glass Jar,” which commences with five minutes of blissed-out synth washes, whispering cymbals (courtesy of new drummer Jesse Lee, whose innovative rhythm magic raises the bar). Its bluster enters gradually, winding in from the margins amid the woozy, intoxicating mix, touches of Latin and Caribbean rhythm (via synth) enter briefly before disappearing again, as melody returns before the whole things whispers to a close. It’s the finest — and longest — track here. “Chinese High” uses Middle Eastern modes and melodies amid criss-crossing bass and drum lines and frequent instrumental interludes where synths zig-zag cross-continental borders from Europe to Asia and beyond. Bougatsos’ singing invokes both the late Ofra Haza and Noa while sounding like no one but herself. “Mindkilla” is the closest link to Saint Dymphna. It’s driven by hard electro-funk, and Bougatsos’ voice and synths are almost painfully sharp, while remaining irresistibly accessible. “Romance Layers” is gorgeously dubby modern electronic soul with mellifluous bass and guitar carrying up Bougatsos –in her lowest register — into the erotic depths. It’s followed by the glistening, limpid, “Sacer,” that’s drenched in Eastern pop, and Joe Zawinul-esque synth (à la mid-to late-period Weather Report), an elegantly elastic bassline, and lilting, layered harmonies by Bougatsos that suggest the Cocteau Twins of Heaven or Las Vegas. As full of other sounds, textures, and harmonics as Eye Contact is, GGD are their own animal, and a chameleon-like one at that. Don’t expect them to stay here for long. This album is indeed a key turning point for the unit, and easily the most fully realized project in their catalog. ~ Thom Jurek, Rovi |

Searching for Contact $15.18 Steven Brown’s third album away from Tuxedomoon is strange, out of immediate contact with its time and place, almost willfully obscure at points — and all the better for it. Searching for Contact makes for one strange and wonderful late-’80s album, with perhaps only the contemporaneous work of Foetus and Marc Almond being the nearest parallels, mashing a slew of ideas — big band blasts, industrial-crawl beats, dark arrangements, and singing with brooding passion — into an often striking combination. Generally the emphasis is on quieter rather than louder music, though when Brown and company turn up the heat, as with the striking opener “Habit,” it can be quite gripping. Brown’s sense of theatricality almost literally manifests itself at points — “Doe’s Day” finds him acting the MC for a nonexistent theater show, while a three-part song sequence is literally described as a series of ‘scenes,’ concluding with a bemusing dialogue — while other performances are less sung lyrics than spoken word poetry of sorts. The emphasis lies with the music first and foremost, though; even the part satire/part reflection of “In Praise of Money” gets its power mostly from the mournful yet busy backing. His less confrontational moments can linger the longest in memory — “Audiences and Stages” (once more continuing the theme of theater), brief but beautiful, has Brown in best crooner mode over low, murky music, while the tenser drama of “This Land,” with Brown matched by a driving though mixed low piano line, and the brief demi-beer hall singalong/buried electronic noise combination of “De Hamburger Veermaster” also stand out. LTM’s reissue in 2004, once again sticking to the label’s philosophy of providing more for one’s money, adds seven bonus tracks, including the entirety of the Me and You and the Licorice Stick EP, as well as the single version of “Last Rendezvous.” ~ Ned Raggett, Rovi |

Giclée (pronounced “zhee-clay”) is an invented name for the process of making fine-art prints from a digital source using ink-jet printing. The word was coined to distinguish commonly known industrial “Iris proofs” from the fine-art prints artists were producing on the same printers. The name has since come to mean any high-quality, ink-jet print, and is often used in galleries and print shops to denote such. In the past few years, the word (as a fine-art term) has come to be associated with prints using fade-resistant “archival” inks and the inkjet printers that use them. A wide variety of substrates are available, including various textures and finishes such as matte photo paper, watercolor paper, cotton canvas, or artist textured vinyl.
