A decade of rising car insurance and road tax Evasion Hits Britain
It is believed that more than two million British motorists fleeing prosecution Despite driving a car which is untaxed and uninsured, with this number will only increase.
Figures discovered by the Conservatives transportation department, showed that the number of drivers evade taxes had increased over the last decade of 63 percent, but the number of people persecuted was only at half. They say that back in 1999 people driving without road tax is a one in six chance of being caught in relation to recent figures from one out of twenty.
A Tory party spokesman said, "These figures are a shocking indictment of the government is really hopeless record on dealing with unruly drivers. The government must sort out this issue. With these statistics highlight is that under this government, things have been getting steadily worse. Rogue drivers without tax or car insurance is a threat to other road users. The direct result of Labour's incompetence in dealing with rogue drivers is that our roads are more dangerous. "
Department for Transport estimates that the number of untaxed cars on Britain's roads increased more than ten years from 1.33 million to 2.17 million, but the number of successful prosecutions for cars tax offenses in the same period fell by nearly 50 percent from 204,606 to 103.108.
Ministers believe that this has led to a 79 million pounds loss in revenue for the period 2007-2008 alone.
An increase in foreign drivers on UK roads from EU countries, mainly from Eastern Europe, has been blamed for rise in illegal motorists. Many documents required for obtaining a tax disc is not working, as the MP's views have contributed to the number of untaxed and uninsured cars.
The Commons Public Accounts Committee published a report describing the governments record on road tax and car insurance as 'poor', adding that they were "Losing ground" in the fight against people avoid these fees and risked becoming a 'complete fools' as things span out of control.
Presidents of Commons Public Accounts Committee, Edward Leigh MP said, "Motorists and motorcyclists who refuse to pay road tax and insurance are stealing from law abiding taxpayers. "
RAC Foundation claimed the figures should be a wake up call for better enforcement. Spokesperson Sheila Rainger said: "Motorists driving without tax is also likely to be driving uninsured and without a TM certificate. Responsible motorists are not only picking up the tab for evaders, they are also endangered by them. The government must increase the number of traffic police out on the road crackdowns, so driving underclass and hardcore tax and insurance dodgers are the ones feeling the pressure, not law-abiding motorists. "
A Department for Transport spokesman revealed that "DVLA and this section, together with police and local authorities is determined to force tax and insurance evaders off the roads. We are targeting persistent evaders and seizing 100,000 unauthorized vehicles annually. New legislation will allow police, DVLA and local authorities to take action against unauthorized vehicles, although they are not parked on public roads. "
