Scale Napoleonic
In the current crisis plaguing the Nigerian banking sector, most bankers surprised the morning newspapers has nothing good to say about the Nigerian banks. Going by the titles of each morning, most bankers are on the brink of depression, wondering "why they hate us so much?"
Well, here it is "good news, "Banks (ERS) has never been loved. They have been hated since money was invented and bankers mastered the art of making money on money, rather than from what money can buy. Bank haters' litter throughout history, it cuts across ages and strata of society. The only common denominator they all have their "passionate hatred of banks "and thus bankers.
Aristotle was a great Greek philosopher of all time, who lived from 384 BC and 322BC and made so many Declarations of wisdom that has stood the test of time time in centuries, however, he had a passionate hatred for petty usurers, who were bankers in his time. For him, "The trade is petty usurer is hated with most reason: it makes a profit from currency itself, instead of doing it from the process which currency supposed to serve. Their common characteristic is obviously their sordid avarice "
Then comes the great French emperor Napoleon Bonaparte regarded as one of the most brilliant people in history who lived between 1769 to 1821. For him, his concern was the relationship between governments and banks. He expressed this concern, when he noted that "Financiers (banks) are without patriotism and without morals; their sole object is gain."
But perhaps the most hate-filled and most memorable quote in the history of banks come from a two time Vice President and one time president of the United States, John Adams, who expressed his raw and undisguised disgust with the banks when he said that "Banks have done more harm to religion, morality, peace, prosperity and even wealth of the nation than they may have done or ever will do good. "
John Adams was the second President of the United States serving a single period between 1797 to 1,801th Before that he was Vice President of the United States for two terms, while his son John Quincy Jones was the sixth president of the United States. John Adams considered as one of the founders of America.
His successor, the Third President of the United States was Thomas Jefferson also had great suspicion on the banks. "I sincerely believe that banking institutions are more dangerous than standing armies, and that the principle of spending money to be paid by posterity, under the name of funding, but fraud futurity on a large scale. "he said.
There are those who have been more cynical in a fun way. Bob a comedian, described the bank as "A place that will loan you money if you can prove that you do not need it." Robert Frost, an American poet shared a similar attitude. For him, "A bank is a place where they lend you an umbrella in fair weather and ask for it back when it starts to rain"
Bertolt Brecht (1888 to 1956), a German poet, playwright and theater director felt it was more criminals to build up a bank than rob one when he said "For what is the crime burglarizing a bank, compared with the crime to build one? "
Have you ever wondered what caused the bank failures. Dan Quayle, the 44 th Vice President of the United Nations listed under the first President Bush, has a pretty funny concept, why banks do not. For him, "Bank failures are caused by depositors who do not deposit enough money to cover losses due to mismanagement "
Earn Warren, who lived from 1891 to 1974 and ended in the 14th Chief Justice of the United States does not hide his contempt for the banks. He put it in the most violent way he can "I hate banks. They do something positive for all other than to take by itself. They are first with their fees and first out when there are problems "
Banks' share in contempt banks have stopped. J. Edgar Hoover former head of Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) in 1961 showed little respect for those who choose to work in a bank when he said "Banks is an almost irresistible attraction for that part of our society which seeks unearned money. "
James Buchan, a British journalist was more explicit about what he is thinking of bankers "Because bankers measure their self worth in money and pay themselves a lot of what they think they are nice guys, and do not need to explain themselves. "he said.
But perhaps bankers should listen to what an American farmer, Edmund Ruffin, who lived between 1794 and 1865 meant the banks. "Banks and wealth are chains of gold, but still chains." Many banks can agree on.
So when you open the morning papers and you can see that the screaming headlines of how bankers are whipping the Nigerian society to remember that "Bank Bashing" has come a long way.
